My last day of this decade. Had an awesome time this past 10 years. I learned a lot of things, I graduated, got married, lived in several different places and cities, hacked many thing, read plenty of code jejejej, etc…

Wow, looking back is both short and so long. All that I prey is to have lots of years ahead of me and even more challenges with lots of fun.

Yes, today is my b-day. Hence I decided to add a few lines in this “kind of” forgotten blog.
Lately, I being doing plenty of interesting stuff, but haven’t had the time to sit and write about those things.

Here are a few updates.
* ESearchy-NG has a few new features. (Spoke being one of them)

* EMaily is almost finished. I have started testing and I’m looking for people willing to test this buggy version. (ohhh… EMaily is an automated companion tool to send client-side emails to hundred or thousands of people in different servers using customizable templates, etc. )

* Several other researches are on my table slowly developing into interesting tools or projects.

After many nights of searching the internez for a script capable of migrating from Drupal to WordPress, I finally found a script for an old version of Drupal. I had to do some work in order to make it work but after a couple of hours of trial and error I managed to modified and improve to old ruby script.

Now, I have a brand new CMS which I’m still finishing some details, but I hope you find this blog better and more likable than the old one. Comments and questions are accepted.

LugparanaConf 2008

Finalmente, me sente a escribir sobre la LugParanaConf 2008.

El Sabado primero de Noviembre se realizo la conferencia de Software Libre en la Universidad Tecnologica Nacional – Facultad Reginal Parana. Gracias a Rodolinux termine dando 3 charlas en el correspondiente orden:

1) Intro a Ruby
2) Ruby Metaprogramming
3) Vulnerabilidades en la Matrix

Dentro de las charlas a destacar encontr? la de Rodolinux
(http://www.rodolinux.com.ar) y otra de Gramos
(http://gastonramos.wordpress.com/), siendo la primera muy filos?fica y psicologica y la otra altamente tecnica.

La conferencia fue todo un ?xito aunque realmente esperaba mas gente. Siendo critico constructivo para ir pensando en LugParanaConf 09, creo que se deber?a haber realizado mucho mas propaganda en tiempo y forma en todas las universidades y colegios t?cnicos de la zona.

Siguiendo la filosof?a de full disclosure, es importante mencionar que la primera charla, fue una peque?a introducci?n a Ruby que hice en el bondi y un rato a la madrugada ( 6 – 8 AM ) cuando llegue a Parana, Asi que pido que sepan comprender y disculparme si contiene errores.
Dicho esto, las otra dos, no. Asi que sientanse libre de hacer comentarios sobre las 3 pero no me maten con la primera.

Hola , hoy queria comprarme un Apple Mighty Mouse wireless, busque un poco y vi que el mas economico ( no por mucho ) era el de MaximiSoft.com.ar. Los llame y no enviaban a domicilio. ( Resulto que tenia suerte). Bueno al salir del trabajo decidi ir a comprarlo personalmente, cuando llego le digo:

Yo: Hola, Llame pare comprar el Apple Mighty Mouse Wireless
Vendedor: Si pera que voy a traer a buscar uno.
Luego de unos minutos
Vendedor: Aca esta .
Yo: eh… pero porque no esta en una caja cerrada de Apple
Vendedor: no ahora para importarlos vienen asi.
Yo: mira vos… , lo quiero prender y no tenia pilas
Yo: No tiene pilas ?
Vendedor: No no tiene pilas ya no viene mas con pilas
Yo pensando ( mmmm … esto esta usado , tiene la mugre que se acumula de los dedos) y claramente Apple nunca enviaria algo asi, deben ser los usados o los que vienen con las Apple iMac que no los venden y me quieren vender eso como nuevo.
Vendedor: y lo queres o no ?
Yo: No gracias no compro cosas abiertas/usadas como nuevos y menos a precio de algo nuevo. Ciao

RECOMENDACION: NO les compren nada a MaximSoft, Ademas de esto un amigo, Martin, tuvo problemas con una Macbook Pro.
Mi solucion y no es para hacer propaganda ni nada fue ir a otra casa, Alfa Uno Macstore y lo tenian 5 dolares mas caro pero claramente como corresponde con caja sellada, con las pilas de lithium y con manuales. Lo mismo creo que es Macstation pero no tienen stock y es unos 30 USD mas caros.

NO SE DEJEN CAGAR POR LOS LADRONES QUE PIENSAN QUE PORQUE ESTAMOS EN ARGENTINA SOMOS TODOS INDIOS Y NO SABEMOS NADA. !!! ESPERO QUE APPLE USA SE ENTERE Y LES SAQUEN LA AUTHORIZATION PARA SER RESELLERS.

Ubuntu 8.04 – what’s new in the can ?

Lately, I have made use of ubuntu for my daily work. It is worth noting that I’m a big Gentoo user and usually I like more those “hardcore distros”. On the other hand I have concentrated my time and effort on creating and doing stuff and trying not to spend time tuning the OS. Ubuntu 7.10 is OK and that is like I said what I usually use if I need a linux desktop. ( most of the time I’m in macosx now).
Anyways, back to ubuntu’s latest version. I decided to give it a try to see if it was “Mom ready”.
Installation
Well , this step already got my attention, the installation on the virtual machine took not time at all and I can for the first time say that it is easier to install than windows. and faster , a lot faster. I could not believe that I was finished. The look and feel it is also a little more professional than before, ubuntu is going on the right direction with this more clean and professional feel. I will give the installation perfect 10. I did this with two different scenarios and both worked like a charm. The only complain that I found was that there was not expert mode that allowed me to do a more geeky installation, But I understand this is not a distro target for those users.
The hardware detection was great, yes, it is a virtual machine and usually they work with everything but still everything was working and even the dhcp was working from the start not configuration needed. great for my mom !
Look & Feel
Once booted the GDM theme again was a little more clean and professional compared to the last. They just keep getting better and better. there nothing wow, but just paying attention to the details is a huge difference. (i.e. macosx have mastered that rule).
Once logged the default wallpaper and the gnome theme also changed a little and for the better.
One thing that I was not able to test was the extra effects AKA compiz fusion and those awesome look and feel characteristics. I use them in my 7.10 ubuntu and they were so easy to install then that I guess they are as easy now or even more automatic. Still I will not give an opinion on that because I was not able to tested. hopefully it is not broken.

Applications
They are using the latest apps firefox beta4 and pidgin latest version, they use evolution for the email client and I like thunderbird, because of openPGP but I have use evolution and it is great the only thing that I do not like is that eats lots of memory.
Transmission, was included in the default installation, a peer to peer client, I was amazed with that ja ja ja.
Another, interested but simple add-on due to the latest version of Gnome, now the clock also allows the user to setup the weather information. The add-on is clear and simple. The rest looks the same but with newer versions and some extras.
UPDATE 1: After several more hours of testing the Appearance Preference Panel has crashed lots of time on me. I do not know if this is Gnome’s fault or some Ubuntu modification that leaved the application unstable. Anyway, it is worth mentioning.

Updating
Due to its beta stage, as soon as you install the OS, you need to download about 250ish MBs , but it is understandable and when it ready this should not happen.
The application in charge of updating it change it is icons and now looks like is doing a much better job. and looks quite cleaner. And from what I looked you can setup an automatic downloading of security updates, which for a normal user seams like a good idea, I wouldn’t do it myself, but it is a good idea.

Support
Besides all the sites and communties the guys from ubuntu have what the Call LTS LTS is an abbreviation for ?Long Term Support?. According to Cannical
They issue a new desktop and server release every six months. That means you’ll always have the the latest and greatest applications that the open source world has to offer.
Also, acording to them, Ubuntu is designed with security in mind, so you will get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server.
With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, they make their very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

Overall
Ubuntu is a very promising distribution and I think is the future of linux for the everyday computer user. We will always have distros like Gentoo and Slackware for those that love computer mechanics AKA nerds, geeks, computer addicts. But this distributions is finally there for my mom, my grandma , and many other computer users that they just need to use the computer. The only problem that I see so far is that still if the applications is not on the repository it is kind of tricky to install but that hopefully will change in the years to come. OSX like application installation will be great, just drag and drop and you have your application working. Also another problem concerning applications is the fact that running windows applications such as Microsoft office is really difficult for an everyday user. they need to learn how to use tools such as cross-over or wine. Yes OpenOffice is great and does everything office does, but remember that a lot of people need office and that it is still a big whole, it is not Ubuntu or Linux fault, but a human and business problem.

while surfing the web I came across a product called ENSO from humanized.com , even though the video is kind of corny the actual product seams really interesting and promising. As a macosx + quicksilver user, at first I though it was just a launcher for windows, but after watching the video as a whole I realize that enso has a much more wide, productive and interesting group of apps. The fact that you can pretty much do every task you want and really fast, makes it a necessary tool to be efficient and productive. Well, anyone interested in the apps, I would recommend you to watch the video and give it try. I will continue doing so in my windows machine for a couple of days and see if it is as good as it is now. The only bad thing so far, not linux nor macosx version , which are my main operating systems.

No tiene nada que ver con la informatica , pero tiene que ver con el dia a dia de mi vida y queria pedirles a todos aquellos que quieran a apoyar a los pequenos y mediano productores de campo en la lucha contra la suba de las retenciones y el constante abuso de nuestra querida presidenta para con todos. Porque primero comiezan por el campo pero si la dejamos seguir , pronto seran nuestros impuestos , ganancias, etc … Esto no es solo una protesta del campo es una protesta de la argentina. Si estas de acuerdo en lo que plantea el campo pone este banner en tu sitio, pasalo en tus emails , etc.

Mucha gente me ha preguntado como agregar el banner en sus sitios asi que aca les dejo un ejemplo de como ponerlo.

[Off Topic] – A que se dedica un lug?

Muchas veces nos preguntamos ?qu? es un LUG?, ?qu? se hace? o incluso ?para qu? sirven?. Tomemos el fragmento de un correo electr?nico escrito por uno de los fundadores de LUG Oro Verde:

         “Estos problemas son los que hoy aquejan y agrupan a los Lugs y organizaciones
          como la nuestra, en Entre R?os en Argentina aqui y ahora:
          * Matriculaci?n Obligatoria
          * DRMs
          * Voto Electr?nico
          * Patentes de Software, etc …
          * Y los temas t?cnicos que siempre nos divierten ”

Cuando una persona nueva o ajena a un LUG mira estas afirmaciones, claramente pensar?a que estos grupos se dedican primordialmente a temas pol?ticos que aquejan a la tecnolog?a en general. En realidad, Matriculaci?n obligatoria, DRMs, voto electr?nico, patentes de software, poco tienen que ver directamente con software libre y aun menos con Linux.

En mi caso, el haber formado parte de un LUG (LUGParana), me ense?o que, como en todo, la pol?tica no les es ajena. Esto, en lineas generales, no necesariamente es algo “malo” en si mismo. Sin embargo, tambi?n aprend? que hay mucha gente que hace uso de los LUGs como plataforma para motivos netamente personales y pol?ticos. Es ah? donde radica mi problema. Es decir, no esta mal discutir sobre los temas mencionados, pero si veo mal que estos sean la bandera que justifican la creaci?n y vida de un LUG.

Muchos a esta altura se estar?n preguntando:
?Que es un LUG entonces?,
?que se hace en LUG? o
?para que sirve un LUG?

Mi opini?n, es que un LUG, en pocas palabras, debe dedicarse principalmente a compartir conocimientos t?cnicos, debatir sobre ellos; promover el uso del software libre (y no es lo mismo promover que “evangelizar”); realizar eventos, charlas, conferencias; desarrollar aplicaciones libres; etc. Estos deben ser un punto de encuentro para personas que comparten un inter?s primordialmente t?cnico. Poco deber?a tener que ver con pol?tica. Ya han sido mucho los LUGs que cuando comienzan a meterse en pol?tica y mezclar negocios con hobbies terminan generando peleas innecesarias, perdiendo miembros o —peor aun– desapareciendo. La pol?tica es para pol?ticos, lo t?cnico es para nosotros (frikis, geeks, etc.) Adem?s, ???por favor!!! Las ciencias exactas son mucho mas interesantes y divertidas. Ya lo dijo Albert Einstein cuando le ofrecieron ser presidente de Israel: “Politics are for the moment. An equation is for eternity.”

Personalmente, amo el open source/software libre. Creo que es una filosof?a de desarrollo que puede llevar a la ciencia a un pr?ximo nivel, no controlado por el dinero sino por el progreso tecnologico. Es por eso que creo que el trabajo de los grupos de usuarios de Linux es muy importante y fomento su creaci?n (como mencione, sol?a formar parte de uno: ?era copadisimo! y ademas hizo mucho por Paran?). Realmente me pone muy triste y de mal humor ver que una gran parte de los LUGs que aun subsisten en la provincia se dediquen principalmente a temas pol?ticos y de negocios y no a fomentar el uso de software libre.

Espero no haberlos aburrido; fue un tema bastante off-topic pero como entrerriano y paranaense me duele ver que los “lideres” actuales del software libre est?n con esa mentalidad y no se escuchen otras opiniones …

Gmail, hotmail y yahoomail new ui’s

Gmail, hotmail y yahoo mail compiten por nuevas interfaces y todos han migrado a interfaces mas “web 2.0″. Siendo que soy usuario de varios navegadores me he percatado que por ejemplo gmail no funciona bien con opera en su nueva interfaz es mas ni levanta te lleva directametne a la vieja. Siendo que en Firefox 3.0 beta si funciona. Hotmail, obviamente unicamente funciona bien en IE, pero en firefox 2.0.x funcion bien pero no asi en 3.0 beta ya que hay que si o si moverse a la vista clasica no 2.0 .
YahooMail en el otro caso si funciona en todas los exploradores, no soy usuario de yahoomail en exceso solo tengo un par de cuentas que chequeo esporadicamente pero probando la nueva interfaz para compararla con las otras me di cuenta de que si andaba en varios browsers.
Bueno se que es medio mediocre el post pero queria compartir esto con todos ya que es interesante por ahi cuando nos preguntamos porque m* no se ve lindo o porque no me anda hotmail.
UPDATE: Google ahora tambien soporta AIM en su gtalk, asi que tambien se puede chatear en gmail con AIM users.

OS2008, lo bueno y lo malo.

Luego de probar OS2008 por unos dias, la verdad que tengo que decir que es mucho mucho mejor que OS2007, la interfaz realmente esta limpia y lista para usuarios finales. Dicho esto, hay que decir que le encontre un par de bugs.

1) Cuando escribo en gtalk, y si a lo ultimo queda una palabra con auto complete, el mensaje es enviado y por alguna razon escribe otro mensaje en el field de escritura, asi que es como que lo escribe dos veces.

2) Lo mismo es escribir dos veces sucede siempre la terminal bash que tiene.

3) Email con imap esta roto, no anda no se puede conectar a los servidores, siempre dice que esta todo mal configurado

Despues de eso, todo anda mas que bien, al menos hasta ahora, hay que esperara que saquen una version con updates y bugfixes para estos problemas que seguro muchos ya los han reportado. Igualmente, el aparatito es muy recomendable.

Gmail/IMAP + Mail.app

Luego de que gmail saco su update para que funcione con IMAP, decidi usarlo en mi laptop para chequear el mail desde ahi directamente. Luego de usarlo por unos dias le encontre un gran problema a la combinacion de Mail.app y gmail; cuando escribo por default las cuentas IMAP en Mail les dice que guarde los draft on server y gmail cuando mail manda esos mails interpreta que esta mandando un mail a la lista y va mandando mails. Luego de unos mails me di cuenta que estaba mandando muuuchoo emails a las listas con sucesivas versiones de mis emails. Ahora le saque la opcion para que guarde los cambios en la maquina local y no los suba espero que esto sirva. Igualmente queria compartirlo con ustedes porque tengo el precentimiento que esto mismo va a psar con todos aquellos clientes que tengan por default en las cuentas IMAP que guarde los draft en server.

Google has been having POP3 since the day it launch, but IMAP has many advantages over POP3 (according to Wikipedia), including faster response time and can synchronize the state of the messages with the server so you don?t have to ?sift through emails that had already been answered,? as Download Squad?s Chris Gilmer put it.

Here?s my question though: How come Google is now building a lot of things that are specifically Made for iPhone? Anyways, the option can be found under Setting->Forward and POP/IMAP, go there and see if you have it.
